Remodeling the existing space inside a home has become a very popular method of upgrading our client’s lifestyle. The baby boomers, especially in this economy, have decided that they want better, not bigger and that means improving what they have, not adding to it. The number one desire of most of these clients is what we call a Master Retreat and the bathroom seems to be the focus of that retreat. After years of using the basic, one person bathroom; they want the luxury of individual vanities, private toilet areas and elaborate showers and large soaking tubs. As empty nesters with a three or four bedroom home, it’s easy to find the space to give them this dream and still allow for a guest bedroom or home office. In fact, many of our designs include two entrances to a home office via the bedroom and the main house.
One of the interesting phenomenons is the fact that these clients aren’t looking at the market value of their home based on the number of bedrooms and baths. Their evaluation is based on comfort, convenience and the enjoyment of being at home. In essence, the entire house will become their master retreat but it starts in the bathroom; where they can have their individual space and enjoy the luxuries that were only found in the finest hotels when they were younger and probably couldn’t afford to stay there.
Oh my, I think I’m on to something! What they used to experience (if they could afford it) or dream about, only when on a luxury vacation they can now have every day. So, for them, every day is a vacation!
What a way to live…
